FGS 2012 Fact Sheet
The Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS), along with local host, the Alabama Genealogical Society (AGS), will be holding its annual conference – Indians, Squatters, Settlers and Soldiers in the ‘Old Southwest’ - in beautiful Birmingham, Alabama from Wednesday, August 29 to Saturday, September 1, 2012. Here are some facts and figures about the conference and its impact on the genealogical community as well as the economy of Birmingham and the state of Alabama.

The Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS), along with local host, the Alabama Genealogical Society (AGS), will be holding its annual conference – Indians, Squatters, Settlers and Soldiers in the ‘Old Southwest’ - in beautiful Birmingham, Alabama from Wednesday, August 29 to Saturday, September 1, 2012. Here are some facts and figures about the conference and its impact on the genealogical community as well as the economy of Birmingham and the state of Alabama.
- FGS has 500+ member societies representing more than 500,000 genealogists.
- FGS was formed in 1976 when it was chartered by the State of Illinois. The first national FGS conference was held in Decatur, Illinois in Fall, 1981.
- The upcoming Indians, Squatters, Settlers and Soldiers in the ‘Old Southwest’ conference will attract close to 2,000 attendees from all over the United States and the world. Attendees will travel from as far away as Canada, the United Kingdom, and Israel.
- For the upcoming conference in Birmingham, there will be more than 175 educational presentations with well-known speakers from all over the U.S.
- Social events include an evening of music with Bobby Horton at the historic Alabama Theatre and a visit to the Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark with a special pour just for FGS conference attendees.
- At the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex, 80 exhibitors in over 140 booths from all over the United States will pack the 96,000 square foot exhibit hall.
- The host hotel, the Sheraton Birmingham, is nearly sold out and solidly booked with conference attendees.
- FGS conference attendees and their families will flock to restaurants, shops and historic sites.
